Twenty-five years later, the story of 9/11 is still being told—and this time, it's told through the eyes of Mississippians who lived it.

The Museum of the Mississippi Delta is honored to host Mississippi Bears Witness, a powerful new exhibit that brings a global tragedy home to the Delta. This is not just the story of 9/11. It is the story of three Mississippians who stood inside one of the most defining moments in American history.

The exhibit features never-before-seen photography taken in New York City on September 11 by a young Mississippian who had just completed film school and documented the unfolding tragedy from the streets of Lower Manhattan into the night. Visitors will also hear the firsthand account of a local survivor who escaped the towers, as well as the story of the Jackson Hot Shots—an elite firefighting unit that deployed to Ground Zero to assist with search, rescue, and logistics in the aftermath.

Rare aerial maps, photos, memorabilia, and personal testimony connect a global event to the people of Greenwood and Mississippi in a deeply human way. A companion curriculum for school children has also been developed to help students understand history, courage, service, resilience, and emergency response.
