The Commissary's Story
You might not know it to look at it now, but that building didn't start out as a tavern. Back in the day, it was a commissary on a plantation over in Doddsville, owned by Senator Jim Eastland.
In those days, you couldn't just hop in a car and run to town. If you needed flour or sugar or a new pair of work boots, this is where you came. The commissary was the heart of the plantation—part general store, part gathering place. Folks would come to get their supplies and catch up on the news, because a trip into Greenwood by mule-drawn wagon took the better part of a day.
When the building was saved from its original location, it was brought here and given new life. The walls have seen a lot over the years—cotton pickers and sharecroppers, then musicians and wedding parties. But it's still the same old building, just with a different story to tell.

The Delta's Music Lives Here
The Tallahatchie Flats Tavern has a deep-rooted history of hosting live music. From intimate acoustic sets to full-blown blues jams, the Tavern comes alive with the sounds of the Delta.
For years, the Tavern has been a gathering place for musicians and music lovers from around the world. Sunday afternoons once echoed with the sound of Ben Wiley Payton, a Greenwood-native and master of traditional acoustic country blues. Payton, who was born in nearby Coila, Mississippi, spent years on the Chicago blues scene playing with legends like Bobby Rush and Eddie Shaw before returning home to Mississippi to teach others about the blues and its role in African American history. He encouraged other musicians to come and sit in, creating a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere.
The Tavern has also welcomed world-renowned artists like Johnny Drummer. Born Thessex Johns in Alligator, Mississippi, Drummer is a celebrated Chicago blues and soul blues singer, keyboardist, drummer, and harmonica player. His stage name came after he saw the film Johnny Guitar, and he has been captivating audiences since the 1960s, even playing with B.B. King.
